On the heels of a record-breaking week of patient deaths and medical bills that were expected to keep rising, a new survey suggests doctors and nurses may be a better fit for the modern healthcare economy than ever before.
The findings suggest that as the demand for health care has increased, so has the supply of qualified physicians, nurses and other professionals to help them.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released a new report Tuesday, saying the best candidates for the job of healthcare professional could be anywhere in the country.
The report said doctors and healthcare professionals could become as much as 5 percent of the workforce.
But experts say there are many factors that affect how skilled healthcare professionals will be.
One of those is a shortage of physicians, the report said.
“There are many barriers that prevent people from getting into the profession,” said Dr. Jeffrey DeBoer, a cardiologist and the lead author of the report.
“If we want to attract and retain the best and brightest, we have to make sure we have a high-quality pool of physicians.”
In recent years, the shortage of doctors has led to an explosion in demand for healthcare professionals, with more than 1.4 million people seeking care in the U.S. in 2018.
That growth in demand has been exacerbated by the growing number of uninsured, said Dr, Mark Schoettler, director of the Center for Health Services Research at the University of Southern California.
That has led doctors to become more patient-focused, which can lead to lower retention rates, he said.
Another factor is a decline in the number of hospitals and medical centers.
And a shortage in the supply chain has led many doctors to turn to self-employment to pay the bills and keep up with the demands of a growing healthcare industry, said Schoeterler.
“The more you know the medical profession, the less you know about the healthcare industry,” he said, adding that this has lead to an ever-increasing number of vacancies.
“When people are doing the job, they’re doing it well.”
The study was commissioned by the American Hospital Association, which represents more than 5,000 hospitals across the country, and found that medical schools are the most important career choice in the healthcare field, followed by a master’s degree in public health and nursing.
Doctors and healthcare workers also earn higher salaries than their counterparts in other fields, which is why they have more to spend on living expenses.
But many doctors also face challenges in finding suitable candidates for those jobs.
A shortage of qualified doctors has forced many people to seek out other careers such as nursing and medicine.
Doctors also face the challenge of finding the best places to live.
And even when doctors find qualified candidates, they often need to get the work done while they’re in the hospital or after they’ve left the hospital.
“A lot of times, they may have to have a little bit of downtime,” said Schuettler.
Some doctors may also be discouraged by the job’s cost.
A 2016 study from the University for Healthcare Research and Quality found that a hospital stay can cost as much or more than a doctor’s annual salary, with a doctor spending about $12,000 more on his or her primary care practice than a nurse, social worker or nurse practitioner.
“In my experience, doctors are pretty pessimistic about being able to find someone that’s going to be able to do the job for them,” said DeBoers.
“And that’s a real issue.”
The report noted that there are also some health care professionals who may be hesitant to get into the field because of health concerns.
“They may not feel they need to be a doctor or a nurse,” said NICE’s DeBoerg.
“But they might be hesitant about doing that for financial reasons.”
The National Academy of Sciences has recommended that health professionals be trained in more skills and be required to take more advanced medical examinations.
But some healthcare professionals may be reluctant to get out of the field.
The American Medical Association recently voted to delay certification of doctors and medical school for a generation, citing the need for more health education and training.
And there are some doctors who are concerned about their profession.
“I don’t feel I have any other options,” said one patient who chose not to be named.
“It’s really difficult to find a job in the medical field.
There’s not enough people.”
Health professionals have been hesitant to speak out about their experiences because they worry about being stigmatized by their peers.
Some people say the job doesn’t pay enough to support their families.
Others fear their medical credentials will be stolen.
But the NICE report noted there are several ways to work around this and says the majority of people who are interested in being a doctor would be willing to accept an offer.
