In a rural part of Virginia, a doctor who specializes in chronic pain is helping people get high with medicinal marijuana.
Dr. Joseph Egan, who has treated hundreds of people with cancer and spinal cord injuries, says he is working with a growing number of doctors and patients to help relieve pain and alleviate symptoms of cancer.
In some cases, he’s helping people take medicine to help them control their symptoms.
But Egan said some patients are taking it because it relieves chronic pain and it is safe.
Egan says his patients are not using it for recreational purposes.
“It is a safe drug,” he said.
But some doctors, including Dr. Peter Coughlin, associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, say the marijuana has no medicinal value and may be addictive.
He says it’s not safe for anyone over 21 and is not prescribed to treat the side effects of chemotherapy.
Coughlin says he has heard many cases where doctors are prescribed marijuana for chronic pain, such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.
But he says that is a bad idea because it’s also associated with higher rates of addiction, which can lead to abuse.
Doctors are recommending doctors use a different method of cannabis, called CBD oil, because it is more effective at helping with pain and nausea than marijuana.
That means doctors should not prescribe marijuana to treat pain, Coughlyn says.
But he adds it is still a safe way to get high.
Dr. Peter Egan says he does not recommend marijuana for treating cancer, but he says he’s seeing more people using medicinal marijuana for the same thing.

He said some people use CBD oil to treat chronic pain.
One doctor in his practice says he sees more than 50 patients a day who use CBD to treat their pain.
He says his colleagues are seeing patients taking it to help with nausea and vomiting and to ease the nausea and anxiety that comes with cancer treatment.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved the drug as a medicine for medical purposes.
But it has said that CBD oil is a drug with some of the same features as opioids, including low abuse potential and little to no addiction potential.
It has been approved for treatment of seizures in cancer patients and epilepsy in children.
In Colorado, state regulators are reviewing a medical marijuana program that has become a magnet for recreational use.
In 2016, Colorado became the first state to allow marijuana for medical use, with the approval of a referendum.
Colorado now has a program to treat some patients with chronic pain that could be a game changer for other states that are looking to expand medical marijuana.
